Under general direction, to coordinate and supervise the repair, maintenance, and minor construction work of buildings and structures at a State institution or group of State buildings; may instruct, lead or supervise inmates, wards or resident workers; and do other related work.

Supervisor of Building Trades

Lays out, assigns, and reviews work, and supervises and coordinates the activities of building trades supervisors, lead persons or journeypersons in such fields as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, masonry, painting and other building work; estimates labor and materials needed for specific jobs; schedules and coordinates the flow of materials with the assignments of the various trade groups so that order of work and job progress are properly maintained; insures that jobs are carried out according to plans and specifications; requisitions tools, materials, supplies, and equipment; supervises the cleaning and maintenance of tools and equipment; as necessary, works with journeypersons of the individual trades in performing construction, maintenance, and repair work; keeps labor and material records; assists in preparing budget estimates for material; prepares reports.

This classification is eligible for the following pay:

$6,843 - $8,914 Base Salary (paid every month)

In addition to the above pay items, employees are eligible for medical benefits (health, dental, vision) and may be eligible for other pay differentials.

Minimum Qualifications

Either I
 
1. Two years of experience as a building trades supervisor. (or)
 
2. Three years of experience as a lead journeyperson (II level) in one of the building trades. (or)

3. Four years of experience as a journeyperson in one of the building trades. 

Or II

Experience: 
Four years of experience as a journeyperson in one of the building trades, at least two years of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity over journeyperson crews engaged in building construction or maintenance and the repair of large buildings such as hospitals, schools, or industrial buildings. (and)

Education: 
Equivalent to completion of the eighth grade. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge: 
Methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in building construction, maintenance, and repair work; methods used in requisitioning, receiving, checking, storing, and issuing materials and supplies; principles of effective supervision; codes, rules, regulations, safety orders and safety practices applying to the various building trades; department's affirmative action program objectives; a manager's role in the affirmative action program and the processes available to meet affirmative action objectives.

Ability to: 
Assign, supervise, and inspect the work of building trades journeyperson, lead persons, or supervisors; schedule and coordinate the work of the various trade groups required on a job; read and interpret blueprints and work from plans and specifications; estimate material and labor requirements; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action; keep accurate records and prepare reports; effectively contribute to the department's affirmative action objectives.
