Under general direction, to perform the more difficult work in and to supervise electrical engineering design, drafting, and inspection work involved in the design and construction of complete State hospitals and institutions, office buildings, and industrial plants; and to do other related work.

Senior Electrical Engineer

Plans, organizes, assigns and checks work, gives instructions and assistance, evaluates performance, and makes technical decisions in connection with the supervision of the work of a group of designers and drafting technicians engaged in making complete designs, construction drawings and specifications of major electrical installations, such as complete office illumination, special psychiatric hospital and maximum security prison illumination, all types of sports area lighting, underground and overhead distribution systems, substations, communication systems, radio and sound systems, fire reporting and alarm systems, and special electrical controls for refrigeration and air-conditioning; reviews and supervises the checking of plans, designs, and quantities; writes technical specifications; supervises the construction of major electrical installations and makes field investigations and surveys; dictates correspondence and prepares reports.

This classification is eligible for the following pay:

$11,094 - $13,882 (paid every month)

In addition to the above pay items, employees are eligible for medical benefits (health, dental, vision) and may be eligible for other differentials.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience:
Five years of professional electrical engineering experience, at least two years of which shall have been in design and inspection work in several of the fields described in the "TYPICAL TASKS" above, and comparable in responsibility to that of an Associate Electrical Engineer in the California state service.

And

Education:
Equivalent to graduation from college with major work in electrical engineering. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)

 

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge:
Electrical theory and practice, modern electrical equipment and apparatus and power distribution and complicated control systems; illumination design and application; specification writing, estimating, and material listing; various codes, safety orders, and regulations governing electrical work; motors, transformers, power centers and their application; principles of effective supervision and planning, organizing, and directing the work of others; department's Affirmative Action Program objectives; a manager's role in the Affirmative Action Program and the processes available to meet affirmative action objectives.

Ability to:
Plan, organize, and direct the work of others; make field inspections and surveys and direct or inspect field construction operations; check drawings and specifications; establish and maintain cooperative relations with those contacted in the work; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action; dictate correspondence and prepare reports; effectively contribute to the department's affirmative action objectives.
