Under supervision, to do a variety of semiskilled manual tasks in the alteration, maintenance, and repair of buildings and building facilities; may instruct, lead, or supervise inmates, wards, or resident workers; and to do other related work.

Building Maintenance Worker

Positions in this class require the independent performance of a wide variety of semiskilled miscellaneous maintenance tasks or assignment as a helper to a skilled craftsperson in a trades class. Most of the positions are located at the various State institutions, although they may occur in any of the State agencies.

Cleans, maintains, and repairs building fixtures and equipment, including locks, windows, doors, screens, venetian blinds, gutters, drains, shelving, and kitchen utensils; replaces light bulbs and fuses; makes simple furniture, cabinet, asphalt tile, and linoleum repairs; assists in maintaining and repairing electrical lines and fixtures; assists in lubricating, regulating, and repairing sewage, water, cooling, and heating system lines and equipment; assists in repairing roofs; assists in repairing plaster and concrete; assists in painting buildings and equipment; occasionally operates automotive equipment and hauls material; requisitions supplies; makes reports on work done.

This classification is eligible for the following pay:

$4,167 - $5,466 Base Salary (paid every month)

In addition to the above pay items, employees are eligible for medical benefits (health, dental, vision) and may be eligible for other pay differentials.

Minimum Qualifications

Either I
One year of experience as a corpsmember in the California Conservation Corps.

Or II
One year of experience in general semiskilled maintenance and repair work, or as a building maintenance or construction trades helper.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge: 
Common methods, practices, and materials used in maintenance and repair work of buildings and building facilities; various tools used in building maintenance and repair work and their proper employment and care.
 
Ability to: 
Do a variety of semiskilled maintenance and repair tasks; follow directions; prepare reports of work done; read and write at a level appropriate to the classification.
