Job Description and Duties The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) is recruiting to fill approximately 150 temporary Defensible Space Inspector (Forestry Aide) positions on a statewide basis. Primary duties of these positions include performance of defensible space inspections and interacting with the public to provide fire prevention information. All appointments are temporary and will not become permanent.

Individuals who meet the minimum qualifications listed below and willing to work up to nine (9) months are encouraged to apply.

SPECIAL NOTE:

The Forestry Aide classification is a seasonal class where only temporary appointments are made. In accordance with the California State Constitution, no person may serve in one or more positions under a temporary appointment longer than 9 months in 12 consecutive months. Therefore, all time served in temporary appointments (for example, CAL FIRE’s Firefighter I) during the 12 consecutive month period will count towards this 9 month maximum.

DUTIES:

Under supervision, as a temporary employee, to do sub-professional work in fire prevention or other related work. Examples of work tasks include but are not limited to, one or more of the following:Perform defensible space inspections in accordance with Public Resources Code Section 4291.Increase awareness, knowledge and actions implemented by individuals and communities to reduce human loss and property damage from wildfires, such as defensible space and other fuels reduction activities, fire prevention and fire safe building standards.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


Either I

Education: Completion of at least 12 semester units or 18 quarter units from a recognized accredited college or university in forestry or fire science, natural resource management, conservation, or a closely related subject.

Or II

Three (3) months of experience with public or private entities performing sub-professional work in forestry, fire prevention, fire suppression and control, natural resource management, or other related work.
