The Forestry Equipment Manager plans, organizes, and directs the program for the purchase, maintenance, and disposition of all mobile equipment; supervises the work of a small group of employees engaged in repair and maintenance of mobile equipment; inspects equipment for conformance to maintenance standards; keeps required records and makes reports on performance, condition, and repair of assigned equipment; works with private vendors on equipment repair and construction; sets work priori ties; reviews progress of work; manages the statewide mobile equipment facility; receives and disposes of all mobile equipment; conducts testing and research projects; plans and coordinates statewide training on the operation, maintenance, and repair of all mobile equipment; prepares manuals and lesson plans; teaches courses; implements and maintains statewide standards for equipment acquisition, contract administration, receipt, operation, maintenance, and repair; prepares budgets.
Forestry Equipment Manager II
(1) Under general supervision of the Division Chief, Operations, is responsible for equipment-related training and for operation, maintenance, and repair of all mobile equipment within the Area/ Region; directs field testing of corrective engineering and individual research projects; supervises a small staff of Forestry Equipment Managers I and/or Heavy Equipment Mechanics engaged in the repair and maintenance of equipment; prepares budget for area/regional equipment programming; keeps records on all expenditures and makes reports; sets work priorities, reviews progress of work, and makes equipment inspections; reviews reports on fatal accidents involving forestry equipment and personnel. (2) Under general supervision of the Senior Forestry Equipment Manager, develops equipment purchase plan, supporting documents, and materials list for the purchase of vehicles and other related equipment; has responsibility for equipment acquisition and disposal; statewide vehicle inventory management; equipment design and development; supervises and directs mobile equipment staff; provides contract administration; plans and coordinates statewide training courses for fire control personnel on the operation, maintenance, and repair of all mobile equipment.
This classification is eligible for the following pay:
$7,209 - $9,357 Base Salary (paid every month)
In addition to the above pay items, employees are eligible for medical benefits (health, dental, vision) and may be eligible for other pay differentials.

Minimum Qualifications
Either I
Two years of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Forestry Equipment Manager I.
Or II
Five years of experience in the construction and repair of gasoline- and diesel-powered mobile equipment, at least two years of which shall have been in the supervision of a small group of journeyperson mechanics or machinists engaged in the construction and repair of gasoline- and diesel-powered mobile equipment. (Experience in the California state service applied toward this requirement must include at least two years in a class comparable to Forestry Equipment Manager I.) (Graduation from college with a degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field may be substituted for two years of the nonsupervisory experience.)
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge Of:
Methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance, adjustment, and repair of mobile equipment; preventive maintenance methods for mobile equipment; flat-rate labor repair time allowances for vehicle repairs; and training methods; supervisory responsibilities under the Ralph C. Dills Act; and a super visor's role in promoting equal opportunity in hiring, development, and promotion of employees, and for maintaining a work environment which is free of discrimination and harassment.
And long-range planning, budgeting, production methods, Federal, and State codes related to fire protection; construction, operation, maintenance, use, and repair of automobiles, trucks, track laying tractors, fire pumps, and other mechanical equipment used by the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection; specification provisions of the California Vehicle Code; preventive maintenance procedures including ser vicing requirements for equipment used by the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection; equipment records and methods of securing and maintaining supplies; fire-fighting techniques with particular reference to the use of motorized equipment; salvage values of worn out or obsolete equipment.
Ability to:
Test, adjustment, and repair of mobile equipment; communicate effectively; assure effective working relationships; inspect equipment to locate defects, and estimate the cost of repairs; requisition and store a supply of parts; keep records and make reports; analyze situations accurately and take effective action; plan and direct the work of others and understand and fulfill supervisory responsibilities under the Ralph C. Dills Act; and effectively promote equal opportunity in employment and maintain a work environment which is free of discrimination and harassment.
And review expenditures, prepare budgets, and operational training programs; review repairs relative to conformance to departmental guidelines; determine causes of major and/or fatal accidents; analyze causes of excessive wear or break down of equipment; read, interpret, and work from plans, drawings, and specifications; dictate correspondence and prepare reports; supervise the construction and inspection for acceptance of equipment; prepare plans and specifications for new special fire-fighting equipment; modify and adapt existing equipment to meet specific needs; determine the desirability of replacing equipment; survey equipment needs for specific areas and develop the most practical types of equipment to meet the needs; conduct training programs; and maintain cooperative relationships with manufacturers.
Special Characteristics
Willingness to work irregular hours and travel throughout the state.
Additional Desirable Qualification
Possession of a valid driver license of the appropriate class issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
